What is Hashimoto's? Symptoms & Guide | Hashimoto Coach

What is Hashimoto's disease? Learn what Hashimoto's is, which symptoms may occur, and how doctors investigate and diagnose the condition.

Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune condition where your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland. Because of this ongoing inflammation, the thyroid tissue becomes damaged, causing the thyroid to work slower and slower. Eventually, this can lead to a shortage of thyroid hormones, which affects almost every process in your body—such as energy production, metabolism, temperature regulation, and the functioning of your organs and muscles.

Because the thyroid plays such a central role, the symptoms can be incredibly diverse. Many of us experience persistent fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, a slower heart rate, brain fog, or mood swings. Sometimes these symptoms develop so gradually that they are hard to recognize at first.

How is Hashimoto's Diagnosed?

A diagnosis is usually made through blood tests. A doctor will look at the levels of thyroid hormones in your blood (such as TSH and FT4) and check for specific antibodies that point to an autoimmune response, like anti-TPO or anti-TG. These antibodies help confirm that your immune system is indeed attacking your thyroid.

It is also incredibly important to check whether the conversion from T4 to T3 is functioning properly, as T3 is the active hormone. Surprisingly, this crucial step is not always included in standard testing.

Although Hashimoto's is a chronic condition, it is absolutely possible to manage it well and find your way to feeling good again—even reaching remission! Treatment usually focuses on replenishing the shortage of thyroid hormones. This can significantly reduce your symptoms, helping you get back to enjoying your daily life. It's also common for other immune-related issues to play a role, such as a B12 deficiency, the Epstein-Barr virus, or the hormonal shifts of menopause, which can all influence your Hashimoto's response.

Nutrition and lifestyle play a vital role in finding your balance, which is exactly what the Hashimoto Coach App is designed to help you with.
